Week 17: 13th FEB TO 19th FEB 2022
An amazing 101 female medics took out time to enjoy our February General Meeting which was held on Saturday 19th February. The State President, Dr Omosivie Maduka gave an account of activities carried out in the recent past in line with the 2021-2023 Biennial Mandate to INVOLVE, IMPROVE and IMPACT. The Pep-Talk was an interactive time on Public Speaking 101 with Dr Ditari Adebisi. Modalities for a celebration of International Women’s Day and for ensuring predictable income for the association’s activities were deliberated on. Finally, the Fit and Fab Segment was a stimulating time with Prof Dada Korubo demonstrating simple exercises for busy medics and Dr Ochuko Otokunefor demonstrating the benefits of juicing.
OUTREACH
MWAN Rivers partnered with the African Centre of Excellence in Public Health and Toxicological Research and the Department of Community Medicine, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) to conduct cervical cancer screening and clinical breast examination at a two- day medical outreach carried out at the UPTH Primary Health Centre, Omuoko Aluu. A total of thirty-five (35) women were seen. Six women had suspicious cervical lesions while five ladies had breast lumps or abnormal breast discharge. They were all referred to UPTH for further investigations
ADVOCACY
MWAN Rivers was well represented at the courtesy call and advocacy visit to the Vice- Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch. In the entourage were the MWAN Rivers State Coordinator, Dr Vivian Ogbonna and the National President-Elect MWAN, Prof Rosemary Ogu. NMA Rivers State during the visit intimated the Vice-Chancellor on the forthcoming NMA Annual General Conference and Delegate Meeting tagged Port Harcourt 2022 which is slated for 15-21st May 2022. The Vice-Chancellor of Uniport, Sir Prof. Owunari Georgewill pledged his continued support for the leadership of NMA Rivers State.
