MWAN RIVERS VISION FOR 2023-2025 BIENNIUM

In line with the MWAN national vision, MWAN Rivers’ focus for the biennium is centred around 4Ps, which are; Promotion of maternal and child health, Partnerships, Participation and Provision of Mentorship for young doctors

Promotion: Our focus is to continually improve maternal and child health outcomes (especially in the area of mental health & nutrition) through various state activities and programmes.
Partnership: We aim to double the number of our current partnerships with corporate organizations, government, non-governmental organisations and individuals.
Participation of more medical women: We have adopted a two-pronged approach to achieve this. Firstly, we aim to have seventy-five (75%) of our members commit financially to the association this biennium, through timely payment of their annual dues, levies and voluntary donations. Secondly, we aim to improve members’ participation; to see that more medical women commit their time and expertise to the association through mentorship, committee activities, medical outreaches, trainings and welfare events etc.
Provision of holistic mentorship for young doctors: This entails passing the baton of leadership through;
1. YDF mentorship masterclasses
2. Leadership trainings
3. Capacity building- via State Committees

HISTORY

MWAN Rivers State

The Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Branch was birthed in 1985. The Initiator, Dr Bernadette T Korubo, without prior knowledge of the existence of such a body in Nigeria, while relaxing with an Italian friend and professional colleague, Dr Maria Corona Onyeonu, mooted the idea of bringing all the female doctors in Port Harcourt together under an umbrella of friendship and fellowship.
Her friend informed her that such an association of female doctors existed in her country and the idea became a reality with a tea party held in Dr Onyeonu's clinic, to which most of the female doctors residing in Port Harcourt were invited. Attendance was encouraging and consequently the body with the name, “Medical Women's International Association” Rivers State Branch was formed. The State Branch at its meeting held an election in which the executive emerged with Dr Tumini Blue-Jack Wilcox as pioneer President.
