Shortly after receiving the mantle of leadership, the new Executives hit the ground running with activities.

The first stop was the 2015 FIDA Law week with the theme “Making Effective Use of Legislation to end violence against women”.

The opening ceremony of the Federation of women Lawyers 2015 week which held on the 13th December at the Chief Judge’s Ceremonial Court, had in attendance, Her Excellency, Hon. Justice Suzzette Ebere Nyesom Wike, wife of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Hon. Justice Elsie Nwanwuri Thompson, a Judge of the African Court, Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau Esq., the outgoing FIDA National President, Hon. Emmanuel C. Aguma (SAN), Hon. Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Rivers State, Hon. Onimim Jacks, a FIDA Rivers inaugural member and Hon. Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Oliver Wolugbom the Director, National Orientation Agency, Rivers State among other dignitaries.

The keynote speaker, Hon. Justice Elsie Thompson in her presentation noted that post legislative advocacy campaigns, media campaigns and litigation at all levels are some of the ways of making effective use of legislation to end VAW.

Education of women on their rights, sensitization of the Police and security agencies, timely medical reports, quick and thorough statements from survivors will also aid the process of prosecution of offenders.

In her address, Her Excellency, Hon. Justice Suzzette Nyesom Wike decried the high rates of VAW and the time it takes for prosecutions. She hopes that someday the duties of magistrates will be expanded to take some cases of assaults instead of sending all to the Department of Public Prosecution. She urged FIDA and MWAN to continue legislative advocacy and routinely send liaison officers to strategic police stations.

Medical women’s Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Branch represented by her Secretary, Dr Vetty Agala gave a goodwill message on behalf of MWAN. She pledged continued partnership with FIDA in order to reduce VAWG in Rivers State.

In a related development, members also attended the Dinner and awards ceremony on the 15th December.
