Media Personality of the Week

Dr. Hannah Omunakwe is with Debbie Banjo at Wave FM 91.7FM. Monday 20th August 2018

Topic: Sickle Cell Anaemia: Diagnosis and care.

Dr Hannah Omunakwe is a Consultant haematologist at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. She is involved in the laboratory diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of people with blood disorders.

Her topic centres around the clinical and laboratory diagnosis of sickle cell anaemia and the basic care and support that is necessary for excellent outcomes for people with sickle cell disease.

Nigeria has the highest prevalence of sickle cell in the world and over 150,000 Nigerian children are born every year with Sickle cell anaemia. The financial burden on families and the health care system due to this disease is very high.

It is important that individuals, healthcare providers and the government takes steps to promptly prevent, identify and support those affected.

Pre-marital screening for genotype, Newborn diagnosis and multidisciplinary care are very important steps to reducing the prevalence and improving outcomes.

The Every Woman Centre run by MWAN Rivers provides free counselling and appropriate referral for families with children with this disease.

Your health is your most valuable asset. Visit the Every Woman’s Center at Lane 1 Block 3, Flat 3, Marine Base Housing Estate, Port Harcourt.
